The creation of the Grand Canyon dates back approximately six million years. Over these millions of years, the Colorado River slowly eroded the land beneath it forming the spectacularly deep canyon. The canyon’s average depth is 4,000 feet deep and is 277 miles long, with a wide variety of ecosystems living all throughout the canyon.
The Grand Canyon became a National Park on February 26, 1919. The Grand Canyon is bigger than the state of Rhode Island.
The South Rim of the Grand Canyon at 7,000’ above sea level. The South Rim is most frequently visited rim of the Grand Canyon because of its proximity to Las Vegas and Phoenix. It is open year-round. The South Rim is 6000 vertical feet from rim to the Colorado River at its deepest.
