The Sierra Nevada is a major mountain range of the western United States. The mountain range runs north to south in Central and Eastern California, overlapping into neighboring Nevada in some areas.
The height of the mountains in the Sierra Nevada increases gradually from north to south. Summits in the northern portion reaching altitudes of only 5,000 feet to 9,000 feet. Summits in the southern portion are higher reaching altitudes from 11,000 to more than 14,100 feet above sea level.
Mount Whitney is the highest summit in the Sierra Nevada and in the contiguous United States and, with an elevation of 4,421 meters (14,505 feet).
